Budget Build Up 2011

Labour in Government is committed to genuineand far-reaching reform and although we are just eight months into ourterm of office, with Brendan Howlin as Minister for Public Expenditureand Reform, we have already made significant progress in that regard. We have:

 

1. Reduced the pay of the Taoiseach andministers

2. Cut spending on ministers’ transport

3. Reformed the way senior civil servantsare appointed

4. Cut retirement packages for secretariesgeneral

5. Introduced pay ceilings for seniorpublic servants

6. Reduced the number of Oireachtas committees

7. Reduced future public service pensions costs

8. Published legislation to reduce judges’pay

9. Put a pay cap on semi state and publicsector bosses

10. Announced a sweeping programme ofpublic sector reform

Possible Closure of Passage West Garda Station

The chairman of Passage West’s Joint Policing Committee, Labour Party councillor Dave O’Byrne has said that he will reserve judgement on reports that the towns Garda station will be closed until after he has spoken with An Garda Siochana at the next meeting of the committee.

“Our next policing committee meeting is scheduled for the 10th of October and I have no doubt that the issue of the station closure will be the hot topic of the night,” said Cllr O’Byrne. Read the rest of this entry »

Network for Women in Business in Carrigaline

The inaugural networking meeting for Women in Business in Carrigaline and the surrounding areas will take place on Thursday, 2nd June in the Bistro in the Carrigaline Court Hotel at 6.00 p.m. and will finish at 8.00 p.m.  Women who are interested in starting their own businesses are also welcome to attend. Catalyst Business Network for Women in South & East Cork

South & East Cork Area Development (SECAD) is setting up a network for women in business in South & East Cork.  The aim of the network is to provide information, tools, networking and learning opportunities, and advice to women who are starting out or want to grow their business.  It will provide opportunities for members to build connections with other business women and aspiring entrepreneurs in their own area and throughout South and East Cork.

New School Proceeding

Labour Party member of Passage West Town Council, Cllr David O’Byrne has welcomed the announcement from the Department of Education that final contracts for the new Star of the Sea primary school are to be signed this week.

LABOUR DAIL MOTION PROPOSES MAJOR CHANGES TO SYTEM OF GOVERNMENT

The Dail will this week debate a Labour Party Private Members Motion making 29 separate proposals for reform of our system of government and public administration.
 
The proposals cover a wide range of measures including cabinet confidentiality, freedom of information, whistleblowers legislation, political contributions and electoral spending limits, registration of lobbyists, Dail reform, the establishment of a Fiscal Advisory Council and new legislation to clarify the respective roles of Ministers and Departmental civil servants. SCHOOL BUILDING PROGRAMME IS A SHAMBLES

Today’s revelation that almost half the budget for the School Building Programme remains unspent highlights the contempt with which this Government treats children, parents and school communities around the country.

Ireland, unlike nearly every other EU Member State, has a growing population. 2008 saw the highest birth rate since 1896, according to the CSO. In two years time, 74,500 children will start school yet so far this year we have not spent €331 million of the budget for new school buildings. Read the rest of this entry »
